Stroke Prevention Studies: Neither Hypertension nor Blood Thinner Drugs Help

Two studies reveal neither a hypertension drug (telmisartan) nor a blood thinner (dipyridamole) worked in preventing the recurrence of strokes, questioning their advantage over using the standard anti-clotting treatment clopidogrel, or in fact, no drug at all, as the data of patients on placebo showed. Intercell AG and Merck & Co Announce Start of Second Phase II Clinical Trial for V710

Intercell AG today announced that its collaborator Merck & Co., Inc. has initiated a Phase II clinical trial of V710, an investigational vaccine for the prevention of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infections. The trial start follows the initiation of a separate Phase II trial in December 2007.

GlaxoSmithKline and Valeant Sign Alliance for Rights to Experimental Epilepsy Drug

U.K.´s GlaxoSmithKline Plc has signed a deal potentially worth up to $ 820 million dollars with U.S. Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, giving Glaxo access to the U.S. company´s experimental epilepsy drug retigabine and other pain treatments. Retigabine has already completed Phase III trials, and may be on the market by 2010. Further details.

Cytokinetics To Test Higher Dose of Experimental Heart Drug

Cytokinetics, Inc announced the completion of a protocol-defined interim analysis in an ongoing Phase IIa clinical trial evaluating the safety of CK-1827452 in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy and angina. The experimental drug, a cardiac myosin activator, is being developed with Amgen Inc for the potential treatment of patients with either acutely decompensated or chronic heart failure.

Patients on U.K. National Health Service May Have Access to Novartis´ Eye Drug Britain´s healthcare watchdog NICE has recommended Novartis AG´s high-priced injectable eye drug Lucentis for the National Health Service (NHS), under a special plan that will cap the cost of treatment to the state. The scheme allows 14 shots covered by NHS; Novartis covers the cost of any further shots.
